- Requirements
- Smoke alarms on each level and outside each separate sleeping area; 10-year sealed battery alarms (ANSI/UL 217), and AC-powered alarms from original construction may not be replaced with battery alarms
- Carbon monoxide alarms within 10 feet of the doorway or inside each separate sleeping area (battery, hard-wired or plug-in with battery back-up), unless the home has no fuel-burning device and no attached garage
- Monitored or low-voltage fire alarm systems need an inspection or certification report from a NJ licensed electrician or alarm contractor showing the system works
- Sump pumps must discharge directly to the exterior
- Garage door openers plugged into a dedicated outlet (no adaptors or extension cords)
- Front door dead bolt must be keyless (thumb-turn) on the inside
- Dryer vents must vent directly to the exterior
- Bedroom windows must operate and be the correct size for egress (especially attic and basement rooms)
- House number visible from the street
- No excessive debris or abandoned vehicles
- Boiler, furnace and water heater flue connections secure at the chimney
- Application asks whether there are open building permits
- Portable fire extinguisher is no longer required (Fire Official memo of March 1, 2025)

Continuing Certificate of Inspection (CCI) for sale, transfer or lease, inspection fee $100.00 CCI re-inspection fee (after a failure) $50.00 - Timing
- Must allow 10 business days for the inspection. CCI inspections are held Tuesday 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Smoke alarms on each level and outside each separate sleeping area; 10-year sealed battery type (ANSI/UL 217); hardwired alarms may not be swapped for battery alarms
- Carbon monoxide alarms within 10 feet of the doorway or inside each sleeping area
- Extra smoke and CO alarms if bedrooms are in separate areas of the home
- Proof that any monitored or low-voltage fire alarm system works (report from a NJ licensed electrician or alarm contractor)
- Portable fire extinguisher no longer required (per the Bureau's March 1, 2025 memo)
