Requirements
  • Housing inspection showing the building and premises comply with all Borough ordinances (Chapter 15 Housing and Property Maintenance)
  • Checklist items include accessible common areas, clean and pest-free unit, lidded trash containers, house numbers at least 3 inches, working doors and windows, handrails on stairs with five or more risers, no key-operated locks from inside, trimmed yard, poison ivy and ragweed removed, paint and surfaces in good repair, no plumbing leaks, water heater relief pipe to within 6 inches of the floor, heat and screens in season
  • Smoke detectors on each level and within 10 feet of each bedroom, and CO alarms, checked at the same request
  • Fire extinguisher, ten lbs. or less (2019 checklist still lists it)

Timing
The Borough code says the certificate is granted or denied within 10 days of the application. Inspections are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Smoke and CO alarm certificate

  • Smoke alarms on each level and outside each separate sleeping area (within 10 feet of each bedroom); 10-year sealed battery alarms unless hardwired alarms from original construction
  • Carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas in homes with a fuel-burning device or attached garage
  • Portable fire extinguisher within 10 feet of the kitchen (2019 checklist still lists it)
