- Exterior: visible 911 house number, steps, walkways, ramps, guardrails, handrails
- Exterior: obstructions and hazards, perimeter grading, gutters, spouts and splash blocks
- Basement or crawl space: foundation openings, secure weatherproof accesses, vapor barrier, mold
- Sump pump: electrical connection, backflow preventer, discharge
- Interior: infestation (mice, insects), handrails, guardrails, bathroom venting (fan or window)
- GFCI receptacles in kitchen and bath
- Garage, flooring, kitchen, bath condition
- Switch and receptacle covers, electrical fixtures, panel box and panel covers, A/C disconnect
- Window glass, operable egress windows, window guards
- Water heater: chimney connection, relief valve and floor discharge
- Water pipes, drain pipes, fixtures, toilet mounting, hot and cold water controls
- Heating system
- All open permits must be closed before the CO is issued

Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Smoke alarms by construction date: pre-1975 homes need 10-year sealed battery alarms on each level including basement; newer homes need AC powered interconnected alarms per the era table
- All smoke alarms must be less than 10 years old; someone must take them down and check the date on the back, and undated alarms must be replaced
- Low voltage (alarm company) fire alarm systems must be tested by an alarm contractor before inspection, with the certification shown to the inspector
- CO alarm within 10 feet of sleeping areas if the home has a fuel burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage; CO alarms must be less than 7 years old
- House numbers: Arabic numerals at least 3 inches tall, contrasting, mounted at least 60 inches above ground and visible from the street
- Secondary power source warning label within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and meter if there is a generator, solar, or battery storage
- Everything must be done before the inspector arrives; an adult (18+) must be present at the start of the time block
