Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- All battery (DC) smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed battery alarms
- Smoke alarms must be less than 10 years old; the realtor, owner, seller or buyer must take each alarm down and check the date
- Smoke alarm type and number follow the year the house was built (for example 1991 to present: hardwired alarms with battery backup on each level and in each bedroom, interconnected); hardwired alarms cannot be replaced with a single battery alarm
- CO alarm within 10 feet of all sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage
- Homes with a secondary power source (solar, generator, battery storage) need a permanent, non-handwritten label at the main electrical panel and electric meter, such as 'Caution: Multiple Sources of Power'
- Homes with a low-voltage fire alarm system must have it certified by an alarm contractor before the inspection
- Electric power must be on; an adult (18+) must be present for the whole inspection; inspectors do not use lockboxes
