Requirements
  • Exterior only: sidewalks, walkways, curbing, driveways and aprons, exterior stairs and handrails, house numbers
  • Sidewalks and walkways free of trip hazards (1/2 inch or more height difference between blocks, or cracks 1/4 inch or wider); bad blocks replaced, not patched; Public Works permit needed
  • Curbs free of disintegration and cracks over 1/2 inch
  • Driveways in good condition, at least 9 by 18 feet; dirt, grass, gravel, stone or shell surfaces not allowed
  • Exterior stairs with more than 4 risers or over 30 inches high need handrails and guards
  • House numbers at least 3 1/2 inches high, readable from the street
  • Repairs must be finished within 30 days of notice; a shade tree permit is needed if trees are in the curb strip
  • No open construction permits and no outstanding zoning violations (signed affidavits from the Construction Office and Zoning Office)

Smoke and CO alarm certificate

Required
Requirements
  • Working 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm in every bedroom and on every level (hardwired 110V alarms are exempt from the 10-year battery rule but must be tested to NFPA 72 with a test report at inspection)
  • Smoke alarms on the ceiling at least 4 inches from the wall, or on the wall 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling
  • CO alarm within 10 feet of each sleeping area
  • Homes with a secondary power source (generator, solar, battery storage) need a non-handwritten label within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and electric meter, such as 'CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER'
  • Fire extinguisher no longer required (removed February 2025 under P.L.2025, c.19)
  • A representative must be present to let the inspector in
