Requirements
  • House numbers at least 4 inches high, contrasting color, permanently fixed to the house and visible from the street (mailbox or lamp post numbers not accepted)
  • Smoke alarm on every level; basement alarm at the bottom of the stairwell on the ceiling (not between joists)
  • Hallway smoke alarms within 10 feet of all bedroom doors; smoke alarms on the ceiling in each bedroom if the home was built after 1991
  • Smoke and CO alarms must be less than 10 years old and working; battery smoke alarms must be the 10-year sealed type; hard-wired alarms cannot be replaced with battery alarms
  • CO alarm in the hallway within 10 feet of all bedrooms (plug-in, battery or hard-wired accepted; not in switched outlets)
  • Homes with a low-voltage fire alarm system need the system tested and certified by an alarm contractor before the inspection, with the certificate shown to the inspector
  • Fire extinguisher still listed on the WTES page (2026): mounted on a bracket within 10 feet of the kitchen in the path of egress, minimum rating 2A-10B:C, under 10 pounds
