Requirements
  • Ten-year sealed battery smoke alarm on each level of living space, in every bedroom and in the basement
  • Carbon monoxide alarm within 10 feet of the sleeping areas
  • Fire extinguisher 2A-10B:C under 10 lb within 10 feet of the kitchen, visible, not behind a door or cabinet, top no more than 5 feet above the floor
  • Chimney certification for fossil fuel burning fireplaces and appliances
  • Handrails on 4 or more risers; guardrails on porches and decks 30 inches or more above grade
  • GFCI outlets within 6 feet of water; circuit breaker panel in order; no bare-wire fixtures
  • Ceilings, walls and floors without holes, chipped paint, severe cracks or water stains
  • Key locks on entry doors only
  • Heat, appliances, hot and cold water and toilets working; anti-tip device on range
  • Water heater bonding strap and relief valve pipe extended to 6 inches from the floor
  • Bathroom has a window or exhaust fan
  • Utilities on at the time of inspection
  • Yard free of trash, motor vehicles and debris; no exterior damage or roof leaks; code violations abated
  • No work without permits, no illegal apartments or illegally rented rooms

  • Fire extinguisher 2A-10B:C, under 10 lb, within 10 feet of each kitchen, visible and accessible, on the maker's bracket, top no more than 5 feet above the floor (Resale Process dated February 2026 still requires it)

City of Burlington Code Enforcement (resale inspection issues the Housing Clear Certificate and the NJ Division of Fire Safety certificate)
