Requirements
  • Working smoke alarm on every level including the basement (not attic or crawl space) and within 10 feet of sleeping areas
  • Original hard-wired or interconnected alarm systems must be kept working; they cannot be swapped for stand-alone battery detectors
  • Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping areas, with more if bedrooms are on more than one level
  • Leave alarm instruction manuals for the next owner
  • House number clearly visible from the road (Township Code 51-3)

Smoke and CO alarm certificate

Requirements
  • Smoke alarm on each level including basements (not attic or crawl space), and smoke and CO alarms outside each sleeping area within 10 feet of bedrooms
  • Homes built before 1977: 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms; later homes: AC hard-wired alarms by year built, interconnected where required, and kept in working order
  • Homes with a monitored NFPA 72 system instead of AC alarms need a certificate of compliance from a certified alarm contractor or electrician; the Fire Department cannot test these systems
  • CO alarm in the common hall outside of, and within 10 feet of, the bedroom doors; battery or plug-in is acceptable
  • House number visible from the public road, contrasting and bright or reflective (Township Code 51-3)
  • The Medford online form (titled 2022) does not list a fire extinguisher
