Requirements
  • Smoke alarms on the ceiling at the bottom of each stair level, centrally located no more than 10 feet from outside each bedroom door, and in an open finished attic; a two-family with a common stairwell needs extra alarms at the highest level
  • Hardwired (A/C) smoke alarms from original construction or rehab cannot be replaced with battery-only alarms; a certified letter or report from a licensed electrician or licensed alarm technician that they were tested and work must come with the application
  • Battery-only smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed battery units listed to ANSI/UL 217
  • CO alarms (battery, hard-wired or plug-in, UL 2034, not past expiration) centrally located no more than 10 feet from outside each bedroom door, in all units except buildings with no fuel-burning device and no attached garage
  • Access to all units, the basement, attic and common areas

Certificate of smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm compliance (due at the inspection the home passes)$75.00
Timing
Submit all documents at least 10 days before closing. After emailing the application, call the office to make an appointment. The certificate expires 6 months after the inspection and is non-transferable.
