Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Smoke alarms on the ceiling at the bottom of each stair level, centrally located no more than 10 feet from outside each bedroom door, and in an open finished attic; a two-family with a common stairwell needs extra alarms at the highest level
- Hardwired (A/C) smoke alarms from original construction or rehab cannot be replaced with battery-only alarms; a certified letter or report from a licensed electrician or licensed alarm technician that they were tested and work must come with the application
- Battery-only smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed battery units listed to ANSI/UL 217
- CO alarms (battery, hard-wired or plug-in, UL 2034, not past expiration) centrally located no more than 10 feet from outside each bedroom door, in all units except buildings with no fuel-burning device and no attached garage
- Access to all units, the basement, attic and common areas
