Issued by
Township of East Hanover Land Use & Construction Departments (Enforcement Officer), after the Fire Prevention Bureau certifies smoke and CO detectors
Requirements
  • Certificate of Compliance application signed by the property owner (resale or rental/lease; single family, two-family, or single family with business use; list any past variances)
  • Separate Smoke Detector/Carbon Monoxide/Fire Extinguisher application and separate check to the Fire Prevention Bureau
  • Inspection by the Enforcement Officer for violations of Township codes and ordinances; violations must be corrected and reinspected (extra fee if more than one reinspection)
  • Fire Prevention Bureau documentation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors must be presented before the certificate is issued

Smoke and CO alarm certificate

Requirements
  • Smoke detectors on every level (basement, first floor, second floor; not crawl spaces or unfinished attics) and in every separate sleeping area; basement detector near the bottom of the stairs
  • Battery smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed units (UL 217); hardwired alarms from original construction cannot be replaced with battery units; homes built in or after 1991 need hardwired interconnected alarms with battery backup inside and outside bedrooms and on each level
  • Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping areas in homes with a fuel-burning device or attached garage (battery, hardwired or plug-in, UL 2034)
  • ABC fire extinguisher, no larger than 10 lbs, mounted within 10 feet of the kitchen in the path of egress, top no more than 5 feet up, new or tagged by a licensed contractor, with owner's manual (Township form and code still list it)

Timing
Fee is based on business days before the change of occupant: more than 10 business days for the lowest fee. If the change of occupancy does not happen within 6 months, a new application is needed.
