Certificate of Occupancy

- Requirements
- Smoke detectors on each level and within 10 feet of each separate sleeping area; battery alarms must be 10-year sealed units since January 1, 2019
- Two-family homes also need a smoke detector at the highest level of each common stairwell
- Existing hardwired smoke and CO systems must be kept to the level of the original certificate of occupancy; battery alarms are not acceptable replacements
- No double-sided tape for mounting detectors
- CO alarms outside each sleeping area, within 10 feet of bedroom doors
- Portable fire extinguisher within 10 feet of the kitchen area: at least 2A:10B:C, no larger than 10 lbs, on a hanger or bracket, top no more than 5 feet above the floor, visible, near an exit path
- All open permits closed out with the proper inspections
- Sheds, fences, pools, decks and garages must have permits on file for the CCO application to be accepted
- Owner certifies the property meets zoning and that no rubbish, debris or bulk garbage will be left before the new occupancy

Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Battery smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed units (since January 1, 2019)
- Two-family homes need a smoke detector at the highest level of each common stairwell
- Hardwired smoke and CO systems must be maintained as originally approved; no battery replacements
- Portable fire extinguisher still required on the Township's 2024 sheet: at least 2A:10B:C, no more than 10 lbs, within 10 feet of the kitchen, mounted with the top no more than 5 feet above the floor
