Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Smoke alarms on each level including basements (not crawl spaces or attics without habitable space), and outside each separate sleeping area
- All smoke alarms must be listed to UL 217, in working order and less than 10 years old
- Battery-only smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed battery units (since January 1, 2019)
- Homes built or altered after 1977 with AC powered or interconnected alarms must keep them working; they cannot be replaced with battery units
- Two-family homes also need a smoke alarm at the highest level of each common stairwell
- Carbon monoxide alarm outside the sleeping area, within 10 feet of bedroom doors, if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage
- Alarms must be mounted securely; double-sided tape is not allowed
- Fire extinguisher (still listed on the 2019 Township form): one ABC extinguisher, 2A:10BC to 10 pounds, on its bracket within 10 feet of the kitchen, top no more than 5 feet above the floor, with the owner's manual; a new extinguisher needs proof of purchase
- Required fire protection systems such as sprinklers must stay fully working
- The owner or the owner's representative must be at the home for the inspection
