- Requirements
- Inspection for compliance with the City property maintenance code (Chapter 266; the form cites the 1990 BOCA Property Maintenance Code)
- Smoke alarms on every level (basement, first and second floors) and outside each separate sleeping area
- Carbon monoxide alarms by every separate sleeping area
- Portable fire extinguisher within 10 feet of the kitchen, in the exit path, visible, top no more than 5 feet above the floor, mounted on the maker's hanger or bracket
- Extinguisher at least 2A:10B:C and no more than 10 lb, with owner's manual or instructions
- Extinguisher serviced and tagged by a DCA-certified contractor within the past 12 months, or a recent purchase receipt

Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Owner self-certification, signed before a notary, on the City's Certification for Resale form
- Built 1978 and before: 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms on each level and outside each sleeping area
- Built 1979 to 1987: AC-powered alarms near each sleeping area and in the basement, plus 10-year sealed battery alarms on each other level
- Built 1987 to 1991: AC-powered, interconnected alarms on each level and outside each sleeping area
- Built 1991 to present: AC-powered interconnected alarms with battery backup in all bedrooms, outside each sleeping area and on every level
- Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping area(s), UL 2034 listed
- Portable fire extinguisher, 2.5 to 10 lb ABC dry chemical, within 10 feet of the kitchen, mounted no higher than 5 feet and visible (2020 form still lists it)
