Requirements
  • Smoke detectors on every level, including at the foot of the basement stairs; UL listed; mounted with screws (no tape, Velcro, nails or picture hooks)
  • Battery smoke detectors must be the 10-year sealed-battery type (since 01/01/2019)
  • CO detectors within 10 feet of sleeping areas; UL listed; mounted with screws unless plug-in
  • Sanitary sewer discharge inspection: no floor drains (basement drains must be cemented over), sump pumps, or yard and driveway drains into the sanitary sewer; sewer trap caps not missing, loose or cracked
  • Fire extinguisher in or within 10 feet of the kitchen, mounted on the maker's bracket, 2 1/2 to 10 lb., rated 2A:10B:C or greater (as printed on the 2021 form)
  • All open building permits and violations closed before the inspector releases the certificate
  • Owner or a representative must be at the inspection; inspections are 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
