Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Districts 1 and 3: working hardwired or 10 year sealed battery smoke detector on each floor including the basement near the stairs, and within 10 feet of each bedroom; hardwired detectors must stay hardwired; detectors over 10 years old must be replaced; UL listed
- Districts 1 and 3: a low voltage fire alarm system needs a passing inspection report from the alarm company, a NJ-certified fire protection contractor or a licensed electrician, shown to the inspector
- Districts 1 and 3: CO detector in the hallway within 10 feet of any bedroom if the home has a fuel burning appliance or attached garage; stand-alone CO detectors no more than 7 years old, combination smoke/CO no more than 10 years old
- Districts 1 and 3: house numbers at least 4 inches high (or at least 2 inches on both sides of a curbside mailbox), visible from the street and contrasting
- District 2: alarm type depends on year built (before 1977 10 year sealed battery; 1977 to 1984 electric; 1984 to 1990 electric interconnected; after 1990 electric interconnected with battery back-up and one in each bedroom); CO alarm within 10 feet of each sleeping area
- District 2: secondary power sources (solar, generator, etc.) must be properly labeled (new February 2025)
- All districts: portable fire extinguisher recommended, not required (since February 2025)
