  • Township checklist (undated, older staff name): smoke detector on every level (10-year sealed battery; hardwired alarms must stay hardwired)
  • Township checklist: carbon monoxide detector on the bedroom level if there are fuel burning appliances
  • Township checklist: handrails on steps with more than 4 risers
  • Township checklist: no broken glass in or around the house, such as windows
  • Township checklist: passing water test
  • Township checklist: fire extinguisher (2A10BC) in the kitchen

Smoke and CO alarm certificate

Requirements
  • 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm on every level, or hardwired where required; hardwired alarms cannot be replaced with battery alarms
  • Basement alarm at the bottom of the stairwell at ceiling level (not between joists)
  • A 10-year sealed smoke alarm in every bedroom
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms must be less than 10 years old and working
  • Carbon monoxide alarm in the hallway within 10 feet of all bedrooms
  • House numbers at least 4 inches high, in a contrasting color, permanently fixed and visible from the street
  • Homes with solar panels, a backup generator or battery storage need a permanent, not handwritten, 'Multiple Sources of Power' style label at the main electrical panel and the electric meter
