Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Minimum 4-inch house numbers visible from the street (Township Ordinance 2009-021); no certificate without them
- Smoke and CO alarms must be UL listed, less than 10 years old, and tested by the owner or agent before the inspection
- Single-station battery smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed units; existing hardwired alarms must work and cannot be replaced with battery alarms
- Hardwired requirements by build date: before 1977 sealed battery alarms on each level; 1977 to Feb 21, 1983 hardwired on sleeping levels and basement; Feb 22, 1983 to Apr 30, 1993 interconnected hardwired on every level; May 1, 1993 and later also inside every bedroom
- Smoke alarm on each level within 10 feet of every bedroom door; basement alarm on the ceiling within 3 feet of the stairwell; wall-mounted alarms 6 to 12 inches below the ceiling; cathedral ceilings need an alarm within 12 inches of the peak
- CO alarms required with any fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, woodstove or attached garage, centrally outside each sleeping area within 10 feet of every bedroom door (UL 2034)
- A central-station monitored fire alarm installed at construction must be kept working; an NFPA 72 test report and proof of monitoring are required
- Homes with solar, a backup generator or battery storage need a durable label (for example 'CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER') within 18 inches of the main panel and the meter
- Fire extinguishers no longer required (since February 3, 2025)
- Units opening onto a common hallway (for example Bald Eagle Commons) need working self-closers
