Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- All smoke alarms must be less than 10 years old and UL listed; battery-only alarms must be sealed 10-year units; NEST battery alarms are not accepted
- Homes with 110-volt interconnected smoke alarms must keep that system working and cannot switch to battery alarms
- Older homes without hardwired alarms need at least one battery smoke alarm on every level, including the basement and a habitable attic
- Any low-voltage fire alarm system must be active and monitored by an alarm company at the inspection
- Smoke alarms in the hallway within 10 feet of all bedroom doors; basement alarm within 10 feet of the bottom of the stairs, not in the stairwell
- Alarms mounted on the ceiling (or on the wall 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling), at least 4 inches from the wall-ceiling corner and at least 3 feet from steamy bathrooms, ceiling fan blades and HVAC supply vents
- Carbon monoxide alarms on every level with sleeping areas, within 10 feet of bedroom doors (not inside bedrooms), less than 7 years old
- Homes with solar panels, generators or battery backup need a durable printed label (letters at least 3/8 inch) within 18 inches of the main panel and the outside meter; handwritten labels are not accepted
- Fire extinguishers are no longer required
- Dogs must be contained when the inspector arrives
