- Requirements
- Smoke alarms listed to UL217 on each level, including the basement (not required in attics or crawl spaces), and within 10 feet of any sleeping area
- Battery-only smoke alarms must have a 10-year sealed battery; units with changeable batteries are no longer allowed
- Existing hardwired (110 volt) smoke alarms must be maintained; any over 10 years old must be replaced before the inspection
- Carbon monoxide alarms listed to UL2034 within 10 feet of any bedroom (battery, plug-in or combination); hardwired CO alarms must stay hardwired
- Homes with solar panels, a standby generator or battery storage need permanent weatherproof, UV-resistant labels (ANSI Z535.4) within 18 inches of the electrical panel and the meter pan
