Requirements

Smoke alarms on every level including the basement; on levels with bedrooms, within 10 feet of the bedrooms
All smoke alarms, including hardwired ones, must be under 10 years old
Homes built before 1978: at least one 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm on each level
Homes built 1978 to 1983: hardwired alarms on each level; 1984 to 1990: interconnected hardwired alarms with battery backup on each level; 1991 and later: interconnected hardwired alarms with battery backup in bedrooms and on each level
Hardwired alarms that must be replaced because of age must be replaced with hardwired alarms, not battery alarms
Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping areas (not needed if no fuel-burning device and no attached garage); battery-only and plug-in CO alarms should be under 5 years old, combination smoke/CO alarms under 10 years
Homes with a generator, solar panels or battery storage need a printed 'CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER' label within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and the electric meter
Homes with a monitored low-voltage fire alarm system need an NFPA 72 test report from the alarm company before closing
No fire extinguisher is required since February 3, 2025
Certificate is valid for 12 months from the inspection date
