Smoke and CO alarm certificate
Required- Requirements
- Someone 18 or older must be home for the inspection; inspections are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and the inspector will not wait
- Homes built before 1977: 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms on each level, including the basement, and within 10 feet of all bedrooms
- Homes with hardwired (A/C powered) smoke alarms must keep them hardwired; they may not be swapped for battery alarms
- Carbon monoxide alarms near all sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage (UL 2034 listed)
- Homes with a generator, solar panels or battery storage need a printed (not handwritten) 'CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER' label within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and of the electric meter
- Portable fire extinguisher no longer required as of February 3, 2025 (per the Bureau's February 2025 requirements sheet)
