Truth in Renting
A free guide from the NJ Department of Community Affairs that explains the main legal rights of renters and landlords. Landlords of buildings with more than two units, or more than three if the owner lives in one, must give it to their tenants.
New Jersey example
If you rent in a six-unit building in Montclair, your landlord must give you a copy of Truth in Renting at or before the time you sign your lease. DCA posts the guide in English and Spanish on its website. A landlord who violates the Truth in Renting Act can face a penalty of up to $100 per offense.
