Residential lease

The agreement that lets you live in a rental home in exchange for rent. In New Jersey a lease can be written or oral, and a written lease must use plain language that the average person can understand.

New Jersey example

You sign a one-year lease for a Paterson apartment. If the year ends and the lease isn't renewed, it becomes a month-to-month lease that renews each month. If the building is sold, the new owner must honor your lease until it expires. If a lease term breaks state law, you can ask the Special Civil Part court to remove it.
