School tax
The part of your property tax that pays for public schools. Most school districts match one town, but some towns belong to a regional district whose costs are split among member towns by property value, enrollment or a mix.
New Jersey example
Say your town shares a regional high school district that needs $40 million from property taxes, split by enrollment. If 30% of the students come from your town, your town's share is $12 million. That is added to your local school district's levy, if your town has one, and collected from owners in your town.
