Realty transfer fee (RTF)

A New Jersey state fee the seller pays when the deed for a sale is recorded. It is based on the sale price, with lower rates for qualifying senior citizens, blind or disabled sellers, and low and moderate income housing.

New Jersey example

Made-up example: a seller with no exemption sells a house for $325,000. For sales not over $350,000, the fee is $2.00 per $500 on the first $150,000 ($600), $3.35 per $500 on the next $50,000 ($335), and $3.90 per $500 on the last $125,000 ($975). Total: $1,910.
