Home inspection

A paid check of a house's condition, often hired by a buyer before closing, that ends in a written report. New Jersey licenses home inspectors under the Home Inspection Professional Licensing Act, passed in 1997.

New Jersey example

Made-up example: after signing a contract on a house in Clifton, a buyer hires a licensed home inspector, who looks the house over and sends a written report. The licensing law also created a Home Inspection Advisory Committee in the state Division of Consumer Affairs and sets grounds to deny, suspend or revoke a license.
