NJ income tax property tax deduction and credit
On the New Jersey income tax return, a homeowner or renter can deduct property taxes paid on the main home, up to $15,000, or take a $50 refundable credit instead. You can claim only one, so pick whichever helps more.
New Jersey example
Made-up numbers: Maria paid $11,000 in property tax on her Edison home, so she can deduct $11,000. Her neighbor paid $18,000 but can deduct only $15,000. A renter paying $2,000 a month ($24,000 a year) counts 18% of rent, or $4,320, as property taxes paid. The deduction lowers taxable income; the credit comes straight off the tax owed.
