Lead-safe certification

A certificate showing a pre-1978 rental home passed a lead-based paint hazard inspection under New Jersey's 2021 rental lead law. Inspections are due every three years or at tenant turnover, and a certificate is valid for two years.

New Jersey example

Made-up case: a landlord rents out a 1920s single-family house in Trenton. The first inspection was due by July 22, 2024, or at the first tenant turnover if that came sooner. When a new tenant moves in, the landlord needs a new inspection unless the lead-safe certificate (good for two years) is still valid. Homes built in 1978 or later are exempt.
