Deed
The signed legal document that transfers ownership of real estate. In New Jersey, deeds are recorded by the county recording officer (the county clerk or, in some counties, the register of deeds and mortgages) in the county where the property sits.
New Jersey example
Made-up example: after a closing in Toms River, the deed goes to the Ocean County recording office. To be recorded, it must show the lot and block number from the town's tax map, the name of the person who prepared it, and the buyer's mailing address.
