Certificate of continued occupancy (CCO)
A certificate for an existing building, issued at the owner's request after a general inspection of its visible parts finds no code violations or unsafe conditions. Some towns inspect homes for resale, and local fees for these certificates vary by town.
New Jersey example
Made-up example: a seller in a town with a resale ordinance books the town inspection before closing. The inspector looks only at the visible parts of the house, so a CCO is not a full report on hidden wiring or pipes. The fee is set by the town's ordinance and can differ from one town to the next.
