Smoke and CO alarm certificate

Requirements
  • Smoke alarms must be ten-year sealed battery single station units (UL 217), effective January 1, 2019; A/C powered alarms from original construction must not be replaced with battery units
  • A/C powered smoke alarms must be tested by a licensed electrician or a certified fire alarm company, with a service report or letter given to North Bergen Fire Prevention at the inspection
  • Smoke alarm on each level and outside each sleeping area (no more than 10 feet); CO alarm outside each sleeping area (no more than 10 feet), UL 2034, NFPA 720
  • The October 2025 application is still titled Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide & Fire Extinguisher Compliance and the guidelines still show an extinguisher within 10 feet of the kitchen near an exit, top no higher than 5 feet, mounted on a bracket
