Certificate of Occupancy Required

Continued Certificate of Occupancy (CCO), residential sale · Linden Health Department (residential Certificate of Occupancy inspections); the Construction Code office handles commercial CCOs

  • Owner certifies the dwelling and all other structures meet the City's zoning requirements
  • No rubbish, debris or bulk garbage may be left on the property before the new occupancy

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • Smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed battery or hardwired, on each level including basements (not attics or crawl spaces) and outside each separate sleeping area within 10 feet of the bedrooms
  • Carbon monoxide alarms outside each sleeping area
  • All alarms must work
  • Hardwired (A/C-powered) smoke alarms from the original construction may not be replaced with battery alarms
  • Homes with a secondary power source (generator, solar panels, battery storage) need a 'CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER' label (not handwritten) within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and the electric meter
  • A property representative or homeowner must be present at the inspection; a no-show counts as a failure
