Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • Smoke alarms on each level including the basement and outside each separate sleeping area; a photoelectric smoke alarm if a bedroom is within 10 feet of the kitchen
  • Smoke alarms permanently mounted on the ceiling or within 12 inches of the ceiling on the wall
  • Battery-only smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed battery units (UL 217); hardwired alarms may not be replaced with battery alarms
  • Smoke alarms in service more than 10 years must be replaced
  • Central station fire alarm systems must be tested before the inspection and a test report submitted, or the inspection fails
  • CO alarm within 10 feet of each sleeping area when the home has a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage (battery, hardwired or plug-in)
  • Secondary power source label (for example CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER, not handwritten) within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and meter
  • Fire extinguishers are no longer required to pass inspection and are optional
