Certificate of Occupancy Required
Certificate of Occupancy (certificate of inspection permitting occupancy) for sale · Borough of North Arlington Construction Official (Construction Department)
- Inspection by the Construction Code Official or agent for compliance with Borough ordinances before any transfer of title or new occupancy
- Smoke detector compliance (CSDC) from the Fire Official; no certificate of occupancy is issued until smoke detector rules are met
- Carbon monoxide alarm required before a certificate of continuing occupancy issues
- Request form lists closing date, open permits, seller and buyer names and phones, and a Use of Building Affidavit
- Title may transfer after the application is filed, but no one may occupy until listed corrections are completed

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Smoke alarm on each level and outside each sleeping area near the bedrooms (Borough Code 165-22); battery smoke alarms are accepted under the Borough Code, but state rules require 10-year sealed battery units
- At least one carbon monoxide alarm inside each dwelling unit; battery units accepted
- No dwelling may be sold or have its occupancy changed until it complies
