- Built 1978 and before: 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms on each level and outside each separate sleeping area
- Built 1979 to 1987: hard-wired alarms near each sleeping area and in the basement; 10-year sealed battery alarms can be added for the other levels
- Built 1988 to 1991: hard-wired, interconnected alarms on each level and outside each sleeping area
- Built 1991 to present: hard-wired interconnected alarms with battery backup in all bedrooms, outside each sleeping area and on every level
- Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping area(s), UL 2034 listed
- Choice of a notarized owner affidavit or an on-site inspection request
