Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Battery-only smoke and carbon monoxide alarms must be 10-year sealed battery units (since January 1, 2019), on each level and outside all bedroom areas
- Hardwired (electric) smoke and CO alarms may not be replaced with battery alarms, and must be replaced after 10 years (date of manufacture is on the underside)
- Electric CO alarms or combination smoke/CO alarms are required on each level and next to any fuel-burning appliance
- Homes with a permanently installed generator, solar panels, battery storage or other secondary power source need a label (not handwritten) within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and the electric meter saying there are multiple power sources
- The fire inspector contacts the applicant to review requirements before the inspection
