Certificate of Occupancy Not required

Sparta Township doesn’t require a resale Certificate of Occupancy.

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • All construction permits must be closed with the Construction Department (Building Department approval is needed before the smoke certification is scheduled)
  • Smoke alarms on each level and outside each separate sleeping area; 10 year sealed battery units, and AC powered alarms from original construction may not be replaced with battery alarms
  • Carbon monoxide alarm in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping areas, in homes with a fuel-burning device or attached garage
  • Secondary power source warning label within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and electrical meter (generators, solar, battery storage)
  • Fire extinguisher: Hardyston's regulations say it is no longer required, but Sparta's own Smoke Certifications page still says one must be mounted in the kitchen
