  • Sidewalks in proper condition under Borough ordinance
  • 5-inch reflective house numbers
  • No trash, debris or unregistered vehicles
  • Roof, siding, gutters and downspouts in satisfactory condition; no structural damage or rotting wood
  • GFI outlets outside (including sheds and garages) and within 6 feet of all water sources
  • Graspable handrails on steps with 3 or more risers (handrails must turn in); guard rails on decks 30 inches or higher
  • Pools enclosed and GFI protected
  • No broken windows; windows open, lock and have screens; deadbolts not keyed on both sides
  • Walls, floors and ceilings without holes or damage and properly painted
  • Working appliances with an anti-tip range; hot and cold water, working toilets and shower; bathroom exhaust fan or opening window
  • Water heater relief valve pipe ending 2 to 6 inches from the floor; working heating system; oil heat needs an emergency shut-off at the top of the stairs
  • Electrical boxes covered, circuits labeled, working outlets, switches, cover plates and fixtures; no extension cords in place of hard wiring
  • 10-year sealed smoke detectors, 1 per level and 1 in each bedroom; carbon monoxide detectors, 1 per level near bedrooms
  • Fire extinguisher (2A:10B:C) mounted in the kitchen (listed on the February 2025 checklist)
  • All required permits obtained and approved; real estate taxes paid to date

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm on every level, or hardwired where required; hardwired alarms cannot be replaced with battery alarms
  • Basement alarm at the bottom of the stairwell at ceiling level (not between joists)
  • A 10-year sealed smoke alarm in every bedroom
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms must be less than 10 years old and working
  • Carbon monoxide alarm in the hallway within 10 feet of all bedrooms
  • A low voltage fire alarm system installed by an alarm company must be tested and certified by an alarm contractor before the inspection; bring the certification
  • House numbers at least 4 inches high, in a contrasting color, permanently fixed and visible from the street
  • Homes with solar panels, a backup generator or battery storage need a permanent, not handwritten, 'Caution: Multiple Sources of Power' style label at the main electrical panel and the electric meter
