Certificate of Occupancy Required

Continued Certificate of Occupancy (CCO) · Borough of Bloomingdale Construction Department (Construction Official; inspection by the CCO Officer)

  • Smoke alarms on each level including the basement, outside bedroom areas, and in the laundry room over the dryer
  • Battery-only smoke and CO alarms must be 10-year sealed battery units (UL listed); hardwired alarms must not be replaced with battery alarms
  • Smoke alarms (hardwired too) over 10 years old must be replaced; CO alarms replaced at end of life
  • Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage
  • Secondary power source label (for example CAUTION MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER) within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and electric meter if the home has a generator, solar panels or battery storage
  • House number on the house, 4 to 12 inches high
  • Graspable handrails on steps with four or more risers
  • Guardrails (at least 36 inches) on porches and stoops more than 30 inches above grade
  • GFCI outlets within 6 feet of any water source inside and on all outside outlets
  • No double-cylinder (keyed both sides) lock on the front entrance door
  • All bedroom windows open and close easily
  • Door from an attached garage into the house must be 20-minute fire rated (steel, 1 3/8 inch solid wood or sheet metal on the garage side, no glass)
  • Heating and water heater flue pipes in good repair and sealed to the chimney; relief valves piped to within 6 inches of the floor
  • Decks in good condition and to NJ building code; pools (24 inches or deeper) to code and zoning
  • Accessory structures in good repair and zoning compliant; yard clean and free of rubbish

  • Hardwired smoke alarms must not be over 10 years old and must not be replaced with battery alarms
  • Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage
  • Secondary power source label within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and electric meter for homes with a generator, solar panels or battery storage (printed, not handwritten)

Bloomingdale Fire Prevention Bureau (Bloomingdale Fire Department, local enforcing agency); smoke detector inspections are scheduled through the Building Department
