Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Required for all resales, including uninhabitable bank-owned properties
- Smoke alarms on each level including basements (not unfinished attic or crawl space) and within 10 feet of sleeping areas; less than 10 years old and at least 3 feet from vents
- Battery smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed battery type; an alarm with a removable battery fails the inspection
- Hardwired smoke alarms must be replaced with hardwired alarms
- Carbon monoxide alarms within 10 feet of the sleeping area, not inside sleeping areas; hardwired, plug-in or battery
- Certificate is valid only for a change in occupancy within 6 months of issue
- The older Township form (updated 10/26/22) also required a portable ABC fire extinguisher mounted in the kitchen; the current form does not mention one
