Brick Township doesn’t require a resale Certificate of Occupancy.

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • Smoke alarms on every level including the basement; on bedroom levels within 21 feet of the bedrooms (per the Bureau's September 2026 sheet)
  • All smoke alarms, including hardwired, must be under 10 years old
  • Homes built before 1978: at least one 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm on each level; 1978 to 1983 electric alarms on each level; 1984 to 1990 interconnected electric alarms with battery backup on each level; 1991 and later also in bedrooms
  • Hardwired alarms that are replaced must be replaced with hardwired alarms, not battery alarms
  • Carbon monoxide alarms on each level with sleeping areas, near the bedrooms; battery and plug-in CO alarms under 5 years old, combination smoke/CO alarms under 10 years old
  • Homes with a generator, solar panels or battery storage need a printed CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER label (ANSI Z535.4) within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and the electric meter
  • A monitored low-voltage fire alarm system still needs the inspection plus an NFPA 72 test report sent to the Bureau before closing
  • Ceiling mount preferred; wall mounts 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling, 4 inches from corners and 3 feet from air registers; not in unfinished attics, stairwells, top of basement stairs or kitchens
