Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Certificate of Compliance before any residential unit is sold or changes occupancy
- Battery-only smoke alarms must be 10-year sealed units; hardwired alarms cannot be replaced with battery alarms
- Smoke alarm type depends on the year built (for example, homes from March 1991 on need interconnected hardwired alarms on all levels and in each bedroom with battery back-up)
- Smoke alarm near every bedroom door; basement and non-sleeping levels near the stairway to the floor above
- Carbon monoxide alarm on each sleeping level near every bedroom door in homes with a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage
- Central station monitored alarm systems must be certified by a licensed NJ Fire Protection Contractor before the inspection
- Secondary power source (for example solar or battery storage) labeling checked under P.L.2025, c.19 when applicable
- Portable fire extinguisher (the Township FAQ and the uninhabitable transfer form still list it)
