Certificate of Occupancy Required
Certificate of Continued Occupancy (CCO) · Borough of Englishtown Department of Code Enforcement (Housing Inspector)
- Inspection by the Borough Housing Inspector for compliance with Borough housing and property maintenance ordinances
- Application lists the owner, block and lot, approximate closing date, type of occupancy (single family, apartment, condo/townhouse) and reason (resale)
- Separate smoke and carbon monoxide certificate from the Englishtown Fire District No. 1 Bureau of Fire Prevention (apply after scheduling the CCO inspection)

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Ten-year sealed battery single station smoke alarms or AC powered hardwired smoke detectors: one in each bedroom, and one on each level within ten feet of the bedrooms (not crawl spaces or unfinished attics)
- Smoke detectors properly mounted, UL listed, with a test button; AC powered alarms from original construction or rehabilitation cannot be replaced with battery alarms
- Carbon monoxide alarm on each level and within ten feet of the bedrooms (battery, plug-in, or part of a central station alarm system); UL listed
- Central station alarm systems need a letter from the monitoring company that the system works
- No fire extinguisher required (the Fire District FAQ cites the February 2025 change)
- An adult must be present; pets secured
