Jersey City doesn’t require a resale Certificate of Occupancy.

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • Ten-year sealed battery single station smoke alarms on each level and outside each separate sleeping area; hard-wired alarms may not be replaced with battery alarms
  • Carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping areas (battery, hard-wired or plug-in)
  • The April 2026 City form no longer lists a fire extinguisher (the 2019 version did)
  • A Fire Prevention inspector does a walk-through inspection before the certificate is issued
