Certificate of Occupancy Required

Certificate of Occupancy (Certificate of Continued Occupancy) inspection · Housing Inspector / Housing Officer, Greenwich Township Construction Office

  • Yard clean, no trash, debris, junk or junk cars; lawn mowed
  • Exterior in good repair, no chipped paint or corrosion
  • House numbers visible from the street (3 or 4 inch depending on setback)
  • Handrails and guards on all stairways; basement stair openings blocked so no fall-through
  • Doors and windows in good condition; windows open smoothly, have screens, stay open; no broken glass
  • Bathrooms have a window or mechanical ventilation
  • GFI outlets in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms within 6 ft of a water source; at least two outlets per room
  • Metal dryer vent (no plastic)
  • Smoke alarm on each floor: 10-year sealed battery unit unless hard-wired with battery backup
  • Carbon monoxide alarm if heat or hot water is gas or oil fired
  • Fire extinguisher rated 2-A:10-B:C (ABC)
  • Water heater in good condition with relief valve discharge pipe ending 6 inches from floor; toilets and plumbing with no leaks; adequate water pressure
  • Oil-fired heater inspected within last 2 years; wood fireplaces or stoves cleaned and inspected by a licensed chimney sweep
  • Electric service in good condition, no bare wires or missing box covers; oil tanks not leaking
  • Sidewalks with no raised sections over 1 inch; sheds, garages and fences in good condition

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • Township CO checklist (Rev. 6/14/21) asks for a 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm on each floor unless hard-wired with battery backup, and a 2-A:10-B:C extinguisher; these are CO checklist items, not a published fire bureau rule
