Certificate of Occupancy Required

Certificate for Change in Occupancy or Ownership (Resale/Rental Certificate) · Springfield Township Construction Office

  • Smoke alarms on every level and outside each sleeping area: 10-year sealed battery alarms, or hardwired where required
  • Basement alarm at the bottom of the stairwell on the ceiling (not between joists); hallway alarms close to all bedrooms
  • Smoke alarms less than 10 years old (or not past the maker's expiration date) and working
  • Hardwired smoke alarms required by the building code cannot be replaced with battery alarms
  • Homes with a monitored low-voltage fire alarm system: have it tested by the alarm company before the inspection and bring the certification
  • CO alarm in the hallway close to all bedrooms, less than 10 years old, UL listed and working
  • Fire extinguisher rated 2A-10B:C, no more than 10 lb, within 10 feet of the kitchen in the path of egress, top no more than 5 feet above the floor, on the maker's bracket, not in a closet or behind a door; leave the manual for the new occupant (March 2025 checklist)
  • House numbers at least 3 inches, contrasting, permanently fixed to the house and visible from the street
  • No open Springfield Township construction permits; all permitted work finalized and passed

  • 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms (or hardwired as required) on every level and near all bedrooms; alarms under 10 years old
  • Hardwired alarms cannot be replaced with battery alarms
  • CO alarms under 10 years old in the hallway near all bedrooms
  • Fire extinguisher 2A-10B:C, 10 lb maximum, mounted within 10 feet of the kitchen, top no higher than 5 feet (March 2025 township checklist still lists it)
