Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

• Smoke alarm type and locations depend on the year the home was built (before 1977: 10-year sealed battery alarm on each level including basement; 1992 to present: interconnected hardwired alarms with battery backup in all bedrooms, near bedrooms and on all levels)
• Hardwired smoke alarms older than 10 years must be replaced with new hardwired alarms with battery backup
• All smoke alarms must be less than 10 years old; if no date is stamped, replace the alarm
• Each level needs an AC (hardwired) or 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm; hardwired alarms must be interconnected
• CO alarm outside and near all sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or garage
• House numbers: 3-inch Arabic numerals, contrasting color, at least 30 inches off the ground, visible from the street
• Low-voltage fire alarm systems must be tested and approved by an alarm contractor before the inspection; give the certificate to the inspector
• Homes with residential fire sprinklers need a licensed sprinkler contractor inspection within 30 days before the fire inspection
• Portable fire extinguisher is required for RENTALS ONLY (2A:10BC, kitchen, visible, mounted no higher than 5 feet, tagged within 12 months or new with receipt); not required for sales
• No change of ownership or occupancy before a successful inspection and certificate; violators face a $500 penalty per occurrence
