Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Smoke detector on each level, with a floor area separated by 3 or more risers counted as a separate level; basement detector on the basement ceiling (not required in an unoccupied attic)
- Smoke detectors must be UL or FM approved and audible in all rooms on that level with doors closed
- Carbon monoxide alarm inspection (the Village calls it a smoke detector and carbon monoxide inspection, under N.J.A.C. 5:70)
- Fee is per dwelling unit, so a two family home pays for each unit

- Timing: Fee depends on how far before the closing the inspection is scheduled: more than 10 days for the lowest fee. The code says the inspection happens within 10 business days of receiving a prepaid application. An inspection after the closing adds a $500 penalty.
