Certificate of Occupancy Required
Certificate of Compliance for Sale of 1 or 2 Family Dwelling · Village of Ridgefield Park Building Department (Housing Inspector under the Construction Official)
- Inspection confirms the home is legally occupied under the Village Zoning Code (1 family or 2 family)
- Smoke alarms on each level and within 10 feet of each sleeping area (UL 217; battery or AC)
- CO alarms (UL 2034, NFPA 720) in the immediate vicinity of sleeping rooms in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages
- Fire extinguisher in the kitchen of 1 and 2 family homes, 2A:10B:C, no more than 10 pounds, within 10 feet of the kitchen, top no more than 5 feet above the floor (code and form still list it)
- Inspector also notes finished attic or basement, attic bathroom, basement kitchen or bath, exterior locks on bedroom doors, property maintenance (cut grass, shrubs, hedges) and a 4-inch house number visible from the street
- Notarized acknowledgment signed by the owner/new owner (and tenant) that attics in two-story 1-2 family homes and basements may not be used as bedrooms or habitable space

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Smoke alarms on each level and within 10 feet of each sleeping area (NFPA 74 placement, UL 217; battery or AC powered)
- CO alarms (UL 2034, NFPA 720; battery, hardwired or plug-in) in the immediate vicinity of all sleeping rooms, no more than 10 feet away, in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages
- Fire extinguisher 2A:10B:C, no more than 10 pounds, manufacturer's bracket, within 10 feet of the kitchen, top no more than 5 feet above the floor; serviced and tagged within 12 months or a recent purchase receipt (code and form still list it)
